Hosted by The Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies in collaboration with the ReOrient Journal\, and the International Islamophobia Studies & Research Association (IISRA)\,  the conference will take place on 23rd-25th September 2022 at the University of Leeds. It will be an in-person event\, and we are looking forward to (re-)connecting with colleagues working in this exciting emerging field and building spaces for explorations and reflections on the conference theme of ‘ReOrienting the post-Western’. DESCRIPTION:Sabnum Dharamsi and Abdullah Maynard will be presenting at the conference above on: \nHow do Muslims survive and thrive within secular and prejudicial spaces?  \nLess heavily framed conceptions of well-being are a precursor for greater inclusivity\, wherein clients can be multi-dimensional and balanced\, rather than two-dimensional figures in the western imaginary.  Abdullah Maynard and Sabnum Dharamsi will share their experiences of spiritual and socio-political realities in the teaching and practice of Islamic Counselling. In doing so we hope to touch on the nature of being\, consciousness\, belief\, and how these primary concepts relate to Islam\, a way of understanding reality shared by 1.6 billion people. Your collaboration will help us create useful discussions that will insha’allah benefit all the listeners. \nThe participants \nFacilitating this conversation is Muna who is completing a PhD on a contemporary Sufi master and his students\, and has a background in publishing books on Islam\, radio broadcasting and teaching. \nBased in Sweden\, Yaquta is a great-grandmother\, and retired community health educator specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine\, QiGung\, permaculture design and self-care. \nSabnum has spent a lifetime raising awareness around mental health\, previously in the drugs and alcohol fields\, race and social justice\, HIV and AIDs\, sex and relationships and holistic/spiritual well-being at the individual\, community and research/strategic level. For many years now her primary focus is the development and teaching of accredited Islamic Counselling in Britain\, the first courses of their kind. \nWith an extensive background in psychology and humanistic counselling\, Abdullah has worked with NGOs and in the public sector with a number of central government departments in the UK. Our intention is to start a conversation by mapping out what mental health and spirituality may mean in 2021 during a pandemic for people of faith. \nSome of the topics we will be covering are:\nWhat is mental health? Naming the prevalent issues of our time including: trauma anxiety and depression\nIntersections of religion\, race\, gender and spirituality with mental health\nGuilt and shame\nSpiritual Bypassing\nPainful emotions and how to be with them\nTraditional and emerging modalities for healing \nPlease note that we will not be addressing severe\, clinical stages of mental health. \nIf you have questions which you would like to put forward during the course of the podcast\, we will try to address them in a series of future podcasts. Your collaboration will help us create useful discussions that will insha’allah benefit all the listeners. \nThe participants \nFacilitating this conversation is Muna who is completing a PhD on a contemporary Sufi master and his students\, and has a background in publishing books on Islam\, radio broadcasting and teaching. \nBased in Sweden\, Yaquta is a great-grandmother\, and retired community health educator specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine\, QiGung\, permaculture design and self-care. \nSabnum has spent a lifetime raising awareness around mental health\, previously in the drugs and alcohol fields\, race and social justice\, HIV and AIDs\, sex and relationships and holistic/spiritual well-being at the individual\, community and research/strategic level. For many years now her primary focus is the development and teaching of accredited Islamic Counselling in Britain\, the first courses of their kind. \nWith an extensive background in psychology and humanistic counselling\, Abdullah has worked with NGOs and in the public sector with a number of central government departments in the UK.
