Stephen Maynard is the founder of Stephen Maynard & Associates, a trained counsellor, consultant and educator, working in the public sector and with NGOs.

He has worked with a number of central government departments including The Department of Health, The Home Office, The Department of Children, Schools and Families and The Department of Local Government and Communities. Also a member of National and Regional (West Midlands) Forums for Mental Health and Spirituality, Advisor to the Department of Health IAPT Programme (Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies) BME Communities, and author of their Muslim Mental Health Scoping Report, He co-founded the Islamic counseling courses.

He is the founder member of The Lateef Project, unique in offering Islamic counselling as part of mainstream services for the NHS in Birmingham.

Sabnum Dharamsi

Sabnum Dharamsi co-founded the model of Islamic Counselling and is Lead Tutor for the Diploma on Islamic Counselling and certificated courses for over 20 years. She has designed the curriculum on many years of research but also from her experience of real engagement with living Islamic teachings and clients over many years. She aims for genuine transformation in her students and clients.

Sabnum is a Partner in Stephen Maynard & Associates. She was the Convenor of the Islamic Counselling module for Cambridge Muslim College Diploma for many years and has taught on the Bedford College Person Centred Diploma. She has a private practice and is a counselling supervisor for organisations and individuals including for the Muslim Youth Helpline. Her previous consultancies are diverse and include Chair of the Muslim Women’s Helpline, Trainer for Women into Work for University, European Partnership Programmes, and International Head Facilitator for the Academy of Self Knowledge (ASK) leading on student learning methods and the training and supervision of a global team. She was Teenage Pregnancy Coordinator (Commissioning) for the Luton Primary Care Trust and has conducted research, policy and training on health and welfare issues. Key areas of work include young people and violence, sex and relationships, drug use and lifelong learning. Her focus on Learning and Development has led to extensive programmes for Learning Skills Councils (LSC’s), the Home Office Board of Visitors, and BT. She is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD) and is a trained Assessor and Learning Development Specialist. She is a member of BAATN (Black, African and Asian Therapy Network) and PCU (Psychotherapist and Counsellors Union). She is a frequent contributor to Online Events, the largest online counsellors training platform). She oversees the Islamic Counselling Facebook Group. 

Sandra ortiz Otila Villareal

Sandra is a Senior Psychotherapist and an Islamic Counsellor with experience of working with children, adolescents and adults of diverse cultural and faith backgrounds. She graduated with a BSc Psychology Counselling and Therapies and holds a diploma in Health Psychology. Sandra trained as an Islamic Counsellor with Stephen Maynard & Associates and was soon appointed as a tutor for Level 2 and Level 3 in Islamic Counselling. Her enthusiasm for this approach is reflected in her commitment to teaching now for over 5 years. She is currently undertaking a Diploma in Psychosexual Therapy at the Tavistock relationships.

Sandra has been a counsellor since 2016 and currently works at the Lateef Project as a Senior Counsellor/Psychotherapist as well as having her own private practice. She is an active member of the BACP, BPS Graduate memberships as well as student memberships for CORST and ESSM
